Frequently Asked Questions
The older system:
Q: I've noticed that my SkyLink radio will occasionally stop working for a few minutes, then it's back to normal. What causes this?
A: That's the mesh network re-configuring itself. If your radio decides it can get a faster or more reliable connection on a different access point, it will lock on to that one instead. The changeover can take up to five minutes.
Q: How can I get the best performance from my indoor SkyLink
A: See the tips at http://www.CactusHotspot.com/tricks
Q: What's the difference between and indoor and an outdoor SkyLink radio?
A:
The indoor SkyLink
radio sits on a window sill or shelf and has an Ethernet cable which runs to
your computer or your router. Installation is fairly easy and takes
our technician an hour or less.Being inside, the indoor connector cannot see as well or as far as the outdoor - the usual limit is about one mile. Additionally, we have more trouble with the indoor connectors because people tend to move them when they clean, and not get them back exactly in the same place. We recommend velcro or drawing a line around the "feet" of the radio in pencil, so it can be erased. There's no setup fee for an indoor connector, but we do charge a refundable $50 deposit. There may occasionally be a waiting list for the indoor units. They have been discontinued by the manufacturer, and we bought his remaining stock to accommodate students and other renters, for whom the outdoor unit is not suitable. We only have about 50, total. |
The outdoor SkyLink
radio mounts on the side of your home (the mounting kit resembles a
satellite dish mount), or rarely, on the roof. Its UV-resistant
Ethernet cable runs through a caulked hole in your siding, into your home.
The technician usually terminates it in a wall plate with an Ethernet jack
so you can plug in your computer or router.
The installation usually takes about three hours. There's a $50.00 setup fee for an outdoor connector to partially defray our labor costs. Because of the labor involved, we don't do outdoor SkyLink installations for short-term residents. |
